Being a Slooper myself, I would be interested in a discussion regarding the parking situation. I have lived in the South Loop for the past 5+ years and have enjoyed ample, free parking. Couple new meters with Daley's privatization plan and you now have the Sloop turning into Wrigleyville.I have posted a couple of emails between myself and Alderman Pat Dowell of the 3rd Ward on my blog. You may link to my blog if you'd like.http://americancrow.wordpress.com/Thanks,American Crow
I'm glad it's Sloopin and not SOLO. I'm a slooper whose living in Arizona but renting my loft at Roosevelt and Wabash. There's a party I'm sure you guys are aware of called the "Wabash Fest" held on Wabash, between 13th and 14th. It's the worst block party anywhere in the world. 2 blocks for a total of maybe 50 people over 2 days. I hope someone with a half of brain decides to at least put up flyers at all of the high rises and actually try to get some neighbors to come, God knows we have enough poeple. I figure this is a long enough heads-up to get your people going. Just found the site and I will definetely be a regular.
Adam, thanks for the comment. We've heard SOLO, but weren't fans because it's just a rip off of SOHO in New York (ie - South of Houston). Although we don't know this for sure, our guess is that a ton of other cities have copied this acronym (or some variation) and we think that's lame. I know there is a building and/or area on the north side called SONO (South of North)...LAME!We've never been to "Wabash Fest", but are aware of it. Maybe we can get more people to come. We will post something eventually.
I would be interested in posts regarding crime in our area. A friend sent me the link to a very similar blog for his neighborhood, Uptown Update and it seems as though they've done a nice job with that - posts that instill a sense of community action rather than inducing paranoia. Always good to be informed!
Great blog! As a fellow Slooper, I'm glad I can now reference a source of localized news and information of our great neighborhood. Regarding the Wabash Fest, I've received flyers for this event in my loft building over the past few years, but the turnout is usually very dissapointing. There are more dogs and baby strollers than actual adults in my estimation. As far as crime/news in the area, I've always referenced Everyblock, started by Adrian Holovaty a Chicago native. It would be great to have some of this information feed into the site. http://chicago.everyblock.com/locations/neighborhoods/south-loop/overview/Again, great job...you've got a new subscriber!
Cuzin Ryan is the Coolest. Great blog. --Falan
Love this site! I am going to add a link to it in our July newsletter. I am the newsletter and website editor for South Loop Neighbors. I will certainly be using Sloopin as a source for info and I invite you to use our website as the same. Feel free to link to us: www.southloopneighbors.org.
One item that might be of immediate interest to Sloopin readers: The 10th Annual SLN Photo Contest & Show is currently accepting entries. Deadline is July 15. This is a juried photo show with more than $1000 in cash prizes. Photos should represent the lifestyle, culture, or history of the South Loop. The winning picts and 20 finalists will be exhibited at a variety of South Loop venues, including Chicago Community Bank and the Harold Washington Public Library. For more info: www.southloopneighbors.org
Great site... I am relocating my family to the Sloop next week from Florida.. (yes, i know its cold in Chicago)I look forward to contributing and future reading! Thanks!Jason
In NY, landlords of vacant commercial space are turning to artists to occupy it temporarily, see article at link below. What do you think of this idea? Do you think this could enliven some of the vacant areas in the South Loop?http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/nyregion/13galleries.html?_r=1&hpI feel like the city needs some creative ideas to bring more life into the area! It's a shame to see so much open commercial space.
Looks lika A Cappella may actually be opening. New signs in the window. Swing by and check it out.
Hello Sloopin!Just wanted to drop you a note to let you know I really enjoy your blog. I've lived in Printers Row for 10 years, and seen tons of change, it's nice to have someone keep things up to date!Wondered if you had heard anything about the Sullivan Center opening. After 4 years under a tarp, I was pretty disappointed when they revealed their progress. Just polished up the metal and tore the inside apart. I know merchants backed out, but doesn't look like they are even close.Heard anything?Keep Sloopin!P.s. your email address doesn't work!
Hey Sloopin-You're pretty rad. I'm not a resident of Chicago, but you do a great job of highlighting the area. Definitely makes me want to come hang out in your neighborhood.Keep writing!EB
I think there may be something opening up next door to Grace O'Malley's. Carpenters have been working there for the past month. I noticed some artwork on the walls (Heineken posters, Bears items, etc).
We would love to see something open in that space next to Grace O'Malleys. We peaked in and saw the signs you were referring to but not sure about the space. We will keep an eye on it. Everyblock is usually a good resource to check out because we can see if business licenses have been applied for
Love Sloopin. It has become my favorite South Loop blog.It would be interesting to see a posting on the places that feel no need to keep their sidewalks clear and why the city doesn't make them abide by the law. The 2 types of worst offenders are the surface parking lots - and in this category the "worst of the worst" is the Park1 lot at Harrison/Dearborn where they actually plow the snow from the lot onto the sidewalk and then leave it there. The other category is any property owned BY THE CITY, which apparently also feels no need to abide by the law.
Jim in the Sloop! I was about to leave a very similar comment about the lack of sidewalk plowing all over the sloop. And you are right on...the worst offenders are the city and the surface lots. If the city wants to plug its budget deficit, it could start by fining these damn parking lot owners for not doing their part to plow the sidewalks. It's appalling that we pedestrians have to keep slipping and sliding on ice and snow until it finally melts away weeks or even months later. I suggest the city look at the vacant lots and parking lots around Wells and Harrison...and just head south and east from there, where they will find many more offenders. I don't get what's so hard about doing the right thing and shoveling your damn sidewalk, especially if you are running a parking lot there. But I guess when the city can't even plow its own property, these business/property owners don't have to look very hard for an example to live by.
I noticed a new goodyear automobile service location on S. Wabash. Does anyone have any news on that?
In all fairness to the Park1 lot I singled out, I must report that in the most recent storm they completely cleared their sidewalks by the next morning. Maybe they read Sloopin??However, I'd like to add "vacant lots" to my list. This year no one has touched the stretch of South Clark between the apartment building I call ALDI, (adli?, can never remember that name) and the Target. Last year was OK, this year a total mess. Just like everything else, vacant lots have owners, and they should be fined. Clark is especially bad since that is a heavily walked stretch due to the Target and now the movie theaters.
Just went to the new Goodyear on S.Wabash for an oil change . . . this great new facility had me in and out in 20 minutes! They get my highest recommendation!
I second the comment about the vacant lot between AMLI (aldi) and Target, as well as the parking lot on the Southwest corner of Polk and Clark. Plow your damn sidewalks! In fairness, I will say, some (only some) parking lots that used to be terrible about shoveling their sidewalks have really done a good job this winter. But the majority of you vacant lot and parking lot owners are a bunch of jerks. I hope you slip and fall...on ice.
Saw a truck carrying the Flo & Santos sign driving on Wabash an hour agoSweetyellowcorn.blogspot.com
Any idea what they are filming on Wabash between Cullerton and 21st St? (they are also stationed on 21st between Michigan Ave. and State.)
Just wanted to give a heads-up that there's some activity in the Exposure/Utopia/Grand Opening site as of today. Looks like all the outdoor awnings have finally come down with the name Exposure on them; great work, but over a year late. The only indication that a business exists inside is a small banner for Utopia attached to the wall. It looked like the doors were open, but I'm not sure what is going on there. Closing? Changing hands? Actually getting a real sign? Let's hope it's one of the former for the sake of our neighborhood.
Let's hope for "Changing Hands."There is great potential at that location. Just not in the hands of anyone involved with 'exposure/utopia/grand opening/now open.'Even with the large awning down, the awning over the front door still says 'exposure' while the sign on the building says 'utopia.' What gives?Oh, and they are apparently still having their "grand opening" even though they've been "open" for at least a year.
Hey Sloopy,Curious if you know anything about the address next to Zapatista, within the same building? The door is South of the Zapatista entrance. Yesterday I was walking over to Subway (1st edition) and I saw a guy stumble out of this building and I think I could smell his urine-cologne from across the street. He didn't appear to be the type that sleeps inside. Thanks.
"address next to Zapatista"sorry, I meant "address next to Exposure/Utopia/Grand Opening/Now Open". I think it's 1325 S. Wabash.
Hey Sloopin,New reader here. Great site.Just wanted to report that it looked like President Obama is using the Waldron Parking Deck as a landing pad for his helis this weekend. Saw two that looked like Marine One and it's decoy, covered by two twin-rotor Chinooks today around 6 PM. Can anybody confirm that it was him?
Last days of the Blue star lounge. The Blue Star you say where is that? The old Buddy guys.It was owned by Tommy Mihas. You could come in the backdoor at 6:30 am and have a beer with your breakfast and last call was at 4am ish. Booze and food 20 hours aday. I doubt Tommy is still aliveI think he hightailed it back to Greece when he sold the building. His name was still on the back of the building. That was until yesterday when they started knocking it down. Also oops the demo crew knocked it over the scaffold and onto the street yesterday afternoon.R.I.P Blue Star !!!! To few real joints left.
Ooh: a little paper sign in the sidewalk window of the Vision On State condos (1225 S. State) says Donna's Cafe (salads, sandwiches, etc.) is coming in there. Any word on this?
storefront next to wine styles on 1200 block of Michigan is apparently being fitted out for a restaurant. the brickwork around the faux fireplace inside looks pretty spiffy. anyone have word on what type of restaurant?
Anon from 9:31 on 7/27We've been told it's going to be a Pita place...not sure beyond that.
There is a new wood fired grill concept moving to the south loop. I beleive it is slated for the 1200 block on Michigan.
Sloopin, what is going on with the week of train horn blasts that we've been experienced? A train in the yard around 15th and Canal lays on its horn repeatedly for 10 seconds at a time from 7:00pm to 10:00pm each night. It is really really irritating.
@BrianAny more info on that wood fired grill concept? Or is this the same as the pita place?
Hey Sloopin, I noticed a dumpster in the parking lot of the closed Sam's at Roosevelt & Wabash. Any word on work being done on something new for that location? Thanks!
Passed lots of 20th Century Fox trucks plus a food truck on Wabash this a.m. (b/w 14th and Roosevelt). What's filming??
What is being filmed on Wabash? More Transformers?
Flo & Santos is now open at 10:30 on Saturdays! Looks like a great place for Football!!
Eat Fit Cafe (stupid name) is newly opened in the South Loop FFC. It's my gym and I'm anxious to try the food. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm just glad there's a healthy option in this neighborhood! Have you ever had a post on the best gym in the neighborhood? I had a little trouble deciding when I first moved here.
The people riding their bikes on the sidewalk has got to stop. I don't move out of the way anymore, and neither should you. Bikers could seriously injure people or dogs and the Segway cops should be cracking down on this. I can understand being afraid of the street riding your bike in Wicker Park, but here? Wide streets and few people exiting cars. Come on people. I'm going to pull a Indiana Jones and jam a stick in your spokes if you ride by me one more time. Kids included.
Lots of hollerin' right now at 16th and Michigan as local lawmakers and movie types walk the red carpet for the Columbia College Media Production Center "gala." http://www.columbiasmoment.org/gala.php Awesome to have the center in the area. Let's hope it starts attracting restaurants!
http://www.chicagorealestatedaily.com/article/20101011/CRED03/101019996/in-brief-united-grows-at-willis-loop-refi-auctionsFailed South Loop condo sites head to auctionThe owner of a failed condominium project in the former Cook County Domestic Violence Courthouse in the South Loop has hired auctioneer Rick Levin to sell the building and an adjoining site of a proposed 130-unit condo tower. Rick Levin & Associates Inc. plans to auction the 69,000-square-foot former courthouse at 1340 S. Michigan Ave. and four parcels to the north on Dec. 15, says Mr. Levin, president of the Chicago-based firm. Concept Developers Inc. bought the former Interior Furniture Co. building for $4.25 million from the county in 2007 and proposed converting the historic seven-story structure into condos. Immediately to the north, at 1330 S. Michigan Ave., Concept had planned the 130-unit Azure Tower. But neither project became a reality, and lender Parkway Bank & Trust filed a $3.3-million foreclosure suit on the properties in August, according to property records. “It's my understanding that the owners and their lenders are working together to bring this property to auction,” Mr. Levin says. Concept and Parkway representatives were not immediately available for comment.
Any idea what is going on with the vacant, boarded up building at 1146-50 S Wabash? While I have never been inside, I can only imagine that it is a rat haven, as some can been seen running in and out of the building at night. There are plenty of holes, and it evens smells of rat. This can't be too good for the two restaurants, Bongo Room and Yang, I hope they don't have a rodent issue. Perhaps the city should inspect this building and the restaurants. I have called 311, but nothing appears unchanged. Thanks for any help and for bringing this to the attention of the community. Here is a Google Map of the building:http://maps.google.com/maps?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=1146+S+WABASH,+CHICAGO,+IL&fb=1&gl=us&hnear=Dolton,+IL&cid=0,0,8570982742035610427&ei=afO3TKDsLYv-nAe2vLzcDQ&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CBIQnwIwAA
Anyone know why Bears fans no longer tailgate in the raised parking lot across the street from 1629 S. Prairie? For the past three or four years, I've seen it jammed with fans prior to Bears game, but after the first preseason game of 2010, they fenced and locked everyone out.
Have you heard of Monkey Bar Gymnasium (monkeybargym.com)? They are opening a Chicago location at 2255 S. Michigan Ave. It doesn't sound like your typical weights and treadmill gym. The web site says it is opening sometime in November. Has anyone heard anything more about this gym other than what's on the site?
American Crow, thanks for sharing the news about the new gym. Haven't heard anything about it, but looks interesting. Appears classes start mid-Nov. Hope they do some kind of Groupon or some other offer to let people get a feel for if it's of interest to them.
Monkey Bar Gym is probably for kids.
no need to post last comment about "for kids"..missed the website and it is clearly for adults.
Hi, do you have any information about the bakery that is opening up on 2200 s. Michigan?
Ruben - are you speaking of the red interior place just before Cermak? I wish it were a first class place since I live down the street, but it looks like it is going to be a dump.
This is only a guess, but I think what's going on in the ground floor space at 733 S. Wells in the Printer's Corner building will be a chiropracter. The name on the building permit matches a woman who runs a chiro practice now in River City.
Another one bites the dust? The South Loop Wine Cellar has been closed for almost a week and frequently closed on random days. Is it going under? I've been in there 3 times and had an unpleasant experience every time. The lady who runs it doesn't know what she's doing and is pretty arrogant so I don't really care. But regardless, I don't like seeing that small business can't survive here.
South Loop Wine Cellar looks like it's closing. Walked past and all the wine was gone from the shelves.
Just in case you hadn't seen, thought I'd toss it your way... http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20101130/NEWS07/101139992/trader-joes-plans-new-grocery-store-in-south-loop
We would like to thank the South Loop for the warm welcome as we open Chi bakery and cafe located @ 2132 S. Michigan. We bring to the area our best cakes and cookies. Were told by our customers that "our Red Velvet cakes and cookies are to die for"! We look forward to meeting all of our new neighbors and pleasing your taste. By the way, were doing everything possible to bring a quality establishment to this community. Unfortunately, there are some hurdles that we have to overcome due to the development of the building but trust we are facing them head on. We look forward to your continued support and building a new relationship with our new neighbors!!! P.S. If you have any suggestions after visiting our location please feel free to voice them or email them to Ent_424@yahoo.com. Chi bakery and Cafe where "Life Taste Good" This week special, purchase any slice of cake or doz. of cookies and receive a free drink of choice! (coffee, can soda, tea, hot chocolate, water, milk) THANK YOU!!!
PLEASE TAKE DOWN YOUR FLASHING OPEN SIGN! I know N. Michigan Ave has a law about flashing signs, but not sure it covers South Michigan. Not sure if this is temporary, but take a look around at the retail (be it small now) and you will see clean, back-lit signs.
New restaurant opening next year at 1639 S. Wabash: http://www.chicagomag.com/Radar/Dish/December-2010/Ryan-McCaskey-to-Open-a-Fine-Dining-Restaurant-in-the-South-Loop/
Just in case you haven't seen it, signs are up for a new convenience store coming soon at State & Archer (Pointe 1900 building) next to Cafe Bionda.
Please do an article or something on the food cart situation currently being knocked around.I don't know where our alderman stands on this issue but I think it's nothing short of criminal that you can't get a Chicago Dog and/or Italian Beef on the streets of this neighborhood.IMO - This city would be truly "World Class" if you could get Greek coffee or a hot pretzel on the street.

Support the Bars tonight and tomorrow. ESPN will be at Buddy Guys on Sunday. GO BEARS!
Any idea why Kroll's has a sign saying it's closed from the 17th to the 19th of January? The shades are all down so you can't see in.
Krolls will be back open tomorrow, they are doing some work to the floors.
chi bakery...(~cermak and michigan) may potentially have the best cake ever...just stopped in for a slice and was amazed..check it out fellow sloopers..there is parking right out front
Here is the latest on what will come of the Opera location (from Chicago Mag's Dish email):"The fat lady has sung for Opera, which closed on December 31st. The Scout (1301 S. Wabash Ave.; no phone yet), owned by Chris Bravos (The Pony Inn), George Archos (Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe), and Jeff Wolfe, is its planned replacement. “It’s going to be a neighborhood eatery and upscale sports bar,” Bravos says. “We’re going to go with something cozy, intimate, and lodgey.” With almost 300 seats, 30 TVs, a wide-ranging beer menu, and fancy bar food, the place will fill an unmet South Loop need, Bravos says. The Scout’s owners are shooting for a May 1st opening, as soon as they finish the remodeling, chef hiring, and their orienteering merit badge."I find the comment that they're filling an "unmet South Loop need" intersting--isn't there a sports bar right across the street (a-hem, Flo & Santos)?
I don't consider Flo & Santos a sports bar. There's not enough TVs, and I don't think they ever even put the audio to sports on, but I could be wrong. But I disagree with the comment as well. Kroll's, Jimmy Green's, Flo & Santos all could be considered sports bars depending on the criteria used.
When is Scientology going to shovel their sidewalk in front of their new Clark home, for which the rehab is going verrrrrrrry sllllllllowly? It's almost 2 days since the blizzard. Nice neighbors...huh. If I fall down and break my ankle, just give me a lawyer's name.

Monkey Bar Gym opened today. My wife and I went for the 6:00 a.m. class. Great atmosphere and hard workout. Love it! Great addition to the neighborhood.
Monkey Bar is fantastic! It is free this week for soft opening as they are still adding to beautiful gym. They have a great staff & showers. They are on the expensive side if you choose to sign-up, but look up their class schedule this week and GO! I bet down the road there will be a great deal on the pricing so go check them out to see if you like it. Parking is available usually; however since the auto show is in town it is a bit tougher right now.
Monkey Bar Gym is looking to hire a SEO / Web / Blog Designer - if interested email Greg email@example.com
For those getting a jump on spring cleaning and looking to donate clothes, now until 2/28 they can be dropped off at Columbia Collge (623 S. Wabash). More info here:http://theloop.colum.edu/s/644/newsletter.aspx?sid=644&gid=1&pgid=252&cid=10591&ecid=10591&ciid=37374&crid=0
Chicago's "Excrement" Ordinance - analysis at http://bit.ly/gm70U3
The area next to Krolls in front of the McHugh's parking lot is absolutley discusting. Full of dog crap. Guarantee it's someone with a big dog coming out of 1720 and not walking any further. Even with a sign there that says to curb your dog. Wish they would get fined.
There's a new BBQ place that opened up at Cermak and State. Any chance on a review?
We will see if we can get down there for a review. Thanks for asking and bringing it to our attention.
It's on Yelp. Two different listings. One with good reviews. One with not so good.
Weather Mark Tavern is not listed on your pool...they have great game day specials, as well as everyday specials.
Sorry to possibly start a new rumor mill on this one, BUT I was at the River North Trader Joe's yesterday and was told that the S. Loop location was on hold indefinately. Has Sloopin or anyone else heard the same from any reliable sources? Thnaks!
Sloopin Site Idea - Calendar to update daily specials (lunch, dinner, drinks). Restaurants, businesses can contact you to update. Thoughts ?
Ditto to Allen, would be a good way to get the businesses involved!
overflow coffeebar on 16th and state..finally a great place to study in the south loop..friendly service, great open space, free wifi. and great lunch drinks/coffee, etc. check it out.
Any idea when pita heaven is opening????
my wife and i tried flavor 180 tonight and it was great!! due to the bad weather we used carry out and there is actually free parking just south of the place in a small one way garage. the service was friendly and timely..i had the mango jerk wings which were phenomenal!! my wife had the tilapia fish tacos--also excellent. overall a great experience and we feel very lucky to have them in our hood. check it out..you wont be disappointed. you can find the menu and number at www.flavor180.com

Anybody know who is leaving all the dog poop on Michigan south of Roosevelt? Somebody has to see this person. It gets worse everyday. HELP!
I think a concern in the sloop in the sidewalk by the new school at the church on Michigan. There is no way to actually get to the sidewalk from the street & I recently a person in a wheelchair have to go down the street because of this. Why is this allowed?
I've been a resident of the Sloop for 6 years and on Saturday I witnessed a sad event for the Sloop / Printers Row -- the Farmers Market. I'm not sure what's happened in the past few years, but it was so sad to see such a limited number of vendors. A few years ago that Farmers Market used to be bustling with several vendors -- but as of late, there are 3-5 vendors. What happened?? How can we get more vendors to come to the Printers Row Farmers Market? This used to be a huge perk to living in the neighborhood. Help!
Rahm's director of transportation lives in the sloop -- this is an encouraging profile about him in the Trib: http://tinyurl.com/4xmayl4
Apparently Frank Morales of La Cocina fame is opening Spanglish Mexican Kitchen in University Center.
Hail damage in the South Loop ???
Any word on what's going on at The Scout? I'm sure the road construction on Wabash doesn't help their plans to open any time soon.Website still says "Look for Opening in June 2011".
Would it be possible to give information regarding rental properties around the sloop? Ive lived in the 1212 S. Michigan building since last summer, but I am not happy with the property or management office as of late. I'd like to stay in the area as it seems that it's been developing quite nicely and adding several aspects (restaurants/bars) that had been lacking for the majority of my stay in the neighborhood. I'm just unsure as to which properties rent or which ones are real estate listings?
Saw signs on the former Wine Styles door and windows that state something to the effect of "look for our opening soon". Anyone know what is going in there?
Anybody catch the license plate of the hit and run asshole who mowed down a cyclist on 14th and Michigan this evening? Our doorman said the second car stopped when she came back down onto HIS hood. The guy who sent her into the air never even slowed.
it was probably this lady: http://chicagojournal.com/Opinion/Letters-To-The-Editor/07-13 2011/Last_will_and_testament_of_a_Chicago_pedestrian
I've noticed all the construction next to 18th st and the river.Do you know if they are extending the riverwalk from Chinatown all the way into the loop? It looks like they are building a new park. Lights were just installed and possible another dock?
I found this blog while doing a search for new things in the neighborhood. It's awesome! I'm so glad to have this and wish I had found it sooner! Thanks for all your work!
Hey -- awesome blog, longtime reader. But recently I no longer see the "Recent Comments" widget on the main page. I've tried numerous browsers and different computers -- it still doesn't appear. Is this an isolated issued to me?
Good Morning,The Learning Program at Mercy Housing Lakefront wanted to send a shout out to the Sloopin blog to say that the volunteer advertisement you placed for us has had the single greatest response of any outreach method our Learning Program has collaborated with. We are so grateful and appreciative that you have helped us reach out to the South Loop community, and want to extend our sincerest thanks! And to the South Loop, thank you for the outpouring of support for adult literacy! Each of you makes the South Loop a truly special place! You should take a look at the Ping Tom Park expansion they are doing (North of 18th). It looks close to complete.
the "recent comments" widget does not appear on the sloopin homepage for me either. it does, however, appear if i click on the title of any individual post.
