Thought that you might be interested to know that the Walgreens at Roosevelt and State will apparently be selling liquor in the future, document attached.
With all of the Chicago/Cook taxes, I have become a liquor-binge purchaser... I get as much as I need in other counties and states. Walgreens will most likely have a big premium on their liquor/wine/beer.
I travel through IN and IA and it seems that they price liquor a little higher than places here in Chicago, so after the tax its almost a wash. I have no problems going to Binnys to buy my booze because of this. Just my observations.
That's just what that corner needed...NOT! (Yes, I know the use of NOT is childish).
I agree with "twinkle twinkle." This corner already has a bad reputation for attracting some undesirable hoodlums. Now, we give them another reason to congregate at that location. Poor idea. Bad for the neighborhood.
We live in a "free market - supply and demand" economy . . . I support Walgreen's right to vend whatever legal substances they choose.
Confuse the cashiers even more. Subtraction??!!!
Night want to stock up on security guards becasue the hoodlums and college students don't need another place to purchase liquor.
This has trouble written all over it.
Booze @ Walgreens + adjacent to eL/subway + nearby pacific garden mission + 24-hour "new" subway shop = trouble
Why such a negative attitude about the Sloop?Economics is why Walgreens is expanding into liquor. They used to sell liquor until a change in marketing strategy. Now a change back. Someone could just walk to Jewel across the street, so no change in the neighborhood to me.Pacific Garden Mission is on Canal. That is the other side of the river and a different hood in my opinion.Nice to have a 24 hour Subway. There are 24 hour tacquerias all over the north side. I wish we had one of those or a 24 hour diner closer than White Palace.Welcome to living in a city. Activity 24/7.
How anyone can have a problem with the Pacific Garden Mission is beyond me . . . they provide a much needed service(s) and are privately funded. Not to mention that their new facility is practically in Chinatown.Liquor can (and should) be legally purchased quite freely. If you think Walgreen's is working in some sort of covert predatory fashion, I suggest you take it up with the proper authorities like your alderman, etc.
Don't forget the dreaded #12 bus!
Shhh! Don't give that bus any ideas, it's already apparently threatening Subway with its drive-by taggings. Walgreens could be next!
Anyone who believes that "the usual suspects" who "line up" for the 12 and 3/4/1 buses along the Roosevelt corner are not responsible for the tagging all around that area is out of touch with reality. (The latest tagging reads: "We Kill Cops" on the face of the builing at 1234 south michigan. Thanks neighbors!!).
Those people walk over our bridge to get to the Pacific Garden Mission.
