Save Money at Gioco & Opera

We know it's tax day and hopefully you're getting money back instead of owing the federal or state governments. With this in mind, we thought it would be appropriate to let Sloopers know that there are two ways of saving money at two popular South Loop restaurants.

First, Groupon has a $50 gift certificate for $25 for Gioco.

Second, we heard from numerous people that KDK restaurants (who run Gioco, Opera, Red Light and Marche) will be giving $50 gift certificates to anyone who buys a entree tonight at one of their restaurants. This is a tax day promotion and only will be offered tonight.

So there you have it...save money in the South Loop on tax day.

Thanks for the tip about the tax day savings. My boyfriend and I hit up Opera tonight, and it was a great deal. For the true tightwad a $100 gift certificate could be had for spending $20, but I was glad to see most folks enjoying drinks and desserts and not skimping.

On another note, Flo & Santos had a line out the door most of the evening. It was nice to see every restaurant we walked past on the way home had a mostly full house. Must have been the weather!

It was an awesome evening last night and people were packing all area restaurants, except for exposure/utopia/grand opening/now open. Thankfully, maybe this means that this "establishment" is no longer.

Further, unfortunately, while the warm weather brings out civilized citizens it also gets the animals out of their cages in droves. There were 6 killed and 11 others wounded in countless shootings all over the south side last night. And, shockingly, not one person is in custody and not one witness is cooperating with police.

Tell me again why it's wrong to not want these animals in our neighborhood roaming our streets? Tell me why it's wrong to be strongly against any public housing going up at the former Ickes location?

Preach on...

Irony in its purest form.

For the most part there are more criminals lurking at these Public Housing buidlings then say Museum Park. Hence, more shootings/crime. FGFM doesn't see it like that. You don't want more public housing cropping up in your neighborhood becasue with it comes crime. Nothing to do with prejudice or race, just sheer facts. I saw cops stop two gentlemen on the middle of michigan and 14th, something went down. Who knows.

I'm not going to flip out about criminal activity occurring miles away from me and they've been tearing down far more public housing than they've replaced.

Thanks for keeping us posted, I heard a guy yelling on Clark Street yesterday.

Unless Commercial rents go significantly down, the South Loop will Remain dormant for a long time to come. People over-paid for commercial spaces and neeed to ask for absurd monthly rents to profit or even break even. I just don't see this happeneing. Yes, it sucks. Everything South of Roosevelt will stay undeveloped for a long time to come. It's just what it is. We live in a dead neighborhood, other than the Lake and Museums. The businesses we have currently are barely making it. Look at Quatro, and Opera, from what I hear, is hurting big time....somtheing about one of the main chef's leaving. Geez, times are rough. It is sad. Name a decent bar in the south loop that you would actually want to watcha game at. None!!! Why, I don't know. Actually I do, but I don't feel like getting into that. Empty Condo buildings everywhere in the South Loop. Prices will and are going to come more down. THe South Loop is in for a shock. Prices have already come down and don't be surprised when they come down even farther. Empty Condo buildings on Wabash, State, michigan and Prairie. Yikes!!! Developers need to stop building condo's, there are no more people moving to the south loop, we need the retail and people will automatically follow!!!! Until then, no one wants to live here. My 2 cents!!!

I agree with the last Anon. If I were a business owner, I'd stay away from the Sloop until Ickes, Hilliard, and Long Grove are all long gone. It's ashame, but it's true.

To anyone who disagrees with the notion that public housing and the seedy criminals that they 'house' are not a huge detriment to commercial development - I point to the otherwise enormous potential of this hood, especially the Cermak corridor. Proximity to the Lake, the Loop, the Museums, Soldier Field, McCormick Place, and easy access to every single major highway in the region (55, 290, and 90/94). No other hood in the city can claim this many "natural amenities.". Yet, this neighborhood lacks even the most basic of commercial tenants and is home to tens of thousands of square feet of empty retail storefronts.

With dropping (vastly!) property values/costs and many condos being auctioned at mere percentages of their value or going rental, a huge influx of "less than desireable" tenants are about to flood this neighborhood. Sad.

Agreed. I also think the "developers" who gobbled up land just before the Sloop became a hot spot are also "less than desireable." For example, check out the bevy of relatively "new construction" buildings in the area undergoing costly facelifts due to shotty work. Further, it seems to me like every building developed by New West is an absolute dump! For example, their two buildings on 16th street (16th and Indiana; 16th and Wabash) are both eyesores. Both buildings are practically brand new and both look like hell with peeling/cracking paint, rusted balconies, and vacant retail fronts.
