New Costco Opening Up On June 28th at Ashland and 14th

A reader recently emailed us letting us know that the new Costco at 14th and Ashland was planning on opening up on June 28th. While we concede that this isn't in the Sloop, it's still good to have a Costco relatively close to the neighborhood (a short drive).

As you might remember we recently had post about Mariano's Fresh Market and their development plans at Clark between 16th and 17th. All of a sudden the area seems flush with grocery options:

A good problem to have if you ask us.

Anyway, are you going to go to Costco? Or is it to far from the Sloop?

This is the best news! We go to the Costco on Clybourn every other week and it sometimes can be a hassle sitting in traffic off of the Damen or Fullerton exits. I love Costco...maybe the same amount as I love Target.

I'm very excited and will definitely be shopping there. Its the perfect distance from the Sloop. Any closer and we would suffer with extra traffic like the the Elston/Fulleron area does in LP. Although, it's only a mafter of time before the Bronzeville residents complain that they live in a food desert and ask why they didn't get this store.

No, I won't be going. Without a family, I don't have a need for these mass quantity type warehouses, but I'm sure it's good for some people.

That June date is going to be very difficult to achieve looking at the current state of the construction. June 28 is most likely a best case scenario...

Please don't tell me that we are now considering 14th and Ashland to be part of the south loop!

I will DEFINITELY shop at that new Costco.

And yes, the short drive will be perfect.

And no to "Anonymous 10:26am" 14th and Ashland will never be considered part of the South Loop.

My husband and I shop at the Pete's Produce store on a weekly basis located at Cermak and Western avenue. Meaning, we actually travel outside of the South Loop to save money on produce and grocery items.

I have passed this 14th Ashland location often and trust me when I say this..that Costco will be the only reason that I would ever STOP at 14th and Ashland.

This is awesome! Right now I've got to head up to Clybourn to do my bulk grocery shopping. This is going to save me a lot of time, fuel, and irritation!

Anon 10:50.. it was like you were writing for me! Same situation.. Once Mariano's opens.. I promise you, you will find that they are PRICED very well and super fresh. I will still need to go to Costco, Trader Joes, Whole Foods for certain things, but for produce it will be Mariano's.

LOL. I thought we all agreed in a previous posting that we were trying to avoid using our cars to go shopping...

For those interested, the general public can buy liquor from Costco. You only need a Costco membership to buy general items. Liquor can be purchased by anyone. So this is good news if you like buying vodka in bulk.

Don't believe me? Google it.

@Anon11:47: True, we love shopping close, HOWEVER...You need your car for bulk shopping or to purchase some largers items that Cosco might be selling (TVs, furniture, etc). This is good news.

@ Anon at 7:38 AM and everyone else that refers to the Clybourn CostCo as the "LP" or "Lincoln Park" CostCo:

THAT IS NOT LINCOLN PARK. I know that that CostCo location calls itself the "Lincoln Park" CostCo, but anyone that grew up in Chicago or has spent some time living in this City knows that its not LP. CostCo just uses the LP name to make it appeal to ignorant LP'ers that are scared to travel anywhere other than Lakeview, Wrigleyville, and River North.

If we all stop calling it the LP CostCo, maybe we can teach people that its okay to venture beyond LP.

Thanks :)

@ Anon 3:12....Well what neighborhood would you say that Costco is located? I think most people will agree that calling it the LP Costco describes the neighborhood perfectly. I've lived in Chicago for almost 8 years would still refer to that area as LP, not the best portion to live in but stil LP

Yes! Driving up to the Costco up north is such a pain! I hope they plan to have a gas station at this location as well because members save a bit on gas prices too.

I'll likely change to this Costco, but it will depend on which market they cater to. As ex-suburbanites, we used to shop at the Oak Brook Costco, and when we moved to the Sloop we discovered that our new Costco on Damen carried a different selection of products - particular noticable in a wider various of food items aimed at a more diverse ethnic market. If the Ashland Costco has this same selection we'll move, if not we'll likely stick with Damen.

I went, I shopped, I love the new Costco. No, it is not in the south loop, but close enough to be more convenient than going to the north side. Also, it has a gas station and the gas there was cheaper than in the suburbs the day I was there.
