Progress at Spanglish...Opening in November?

Spanglish, the rumored restaurant at 555. S State, has been a topic we've covered on Sloopin since July of 2011.  Last year we thought they might open up in September 2011 (via metromix).  That didn't happen.

Then this year another restaurateur told us that Spanglish was going to open on Cinco de Mayo.  That didn't happen.

A perceptive reader posted a picture on our message board (see picture to the left) and we also saw lights on as well.  So judging by the progress and build-out inside the restaurant finally looks like it might open.  The reader also noted a post on Metromix saying that they were going to open in November.

While it's possible, we're still not optimistic.  Hopefully we're wrong because damn I love tacos.

(Hat tip:  Bingo!)

Do these places have to pay full rent while they're in "opening" mode? If so, it's no wonder they go out of business so quickly once they do open. They're already greatly in the hole.

depends on the lease but usually not. no way they paid 2 years of rent to build out that space.

If their prices can be decent, then they should be able to make a killing. There's a lot of college kids in literally no distance at all, the Jones College Prep which may or may not contribute after school, and then all the residences nearby. If their prices are high, or the food selection is weird, I could see it being the next Chutney Joes and only last a year or two. I wonder what Flaco's has to say about this. I bet they're not happy.

Flacos is the worst... All their food tastes like it was cooked 3 days ago. I often wonder how they can be as busy as they are. My guess is lack of GOOD options in the area.

Actually, Flacos has improved significantly in the last 6 months. Last year I would have agreed with ErikB, but right now they are pretty good. Delivery is also really fast.

isnt spanglish going to be run by the same people that run la cocina? if its anything like la cocina it will be very different than flacos. totally different style. im sure that this neighborhood can handle more than one mexican place.

c@ErikB- I agree. I've never liked it and last time I ate at Flacos I got horrible food poisoning. I'm excited for a quick Mexican restaurant that isn't going to make me sick.
