Knock Three Times for Some Dope Kicks

Old news from the weekend, but still interesting. From the Chicago Tribune:

Knock three times, buy cheap — and fake — Nikes. That's the scam a shop owner was running out of a women's boutique in the South Loop, police said Saturday.

The owner, Boe Eng, 43, of the 2500 block of West 40th Street, was charged with felony theft as well as unauthorized use of trademarks, a misdemeanor. He was ordered held in lieu of $50,000 bail at a Saturday hearing before Cook County Circuit Judge Peggy Chiampas.

On Friday morning, police seized boxes full of 1,864 pairs of Nike gym shoes believed to be fakes at EPretty Inc., 626 W. Roosevelt Road, and arrested Eng, authorities said. The shoes are worth an estimated $162,000.

625 West Roosevelt is not South Loop.

Seriously, this is turning into a blog about crime in the South Loop's neighbors. Couldn't you have at least given us more analysis than "[this is] interesting?" No wonder the the first response is from a troll!

You mean to tell me that a shop-owner from the Englewood/Bronzeville neighborhood who operates a store on the skid row strip of Roosevelt Road, amongst the pimp clothing store and currancy exchanges is a criminal? Shocking!

I note your sarcasim and completely agree. This strip of Roosevelt Road COULD be so much more! I mean there is a Whole Foods (pretty high end), Best Buy (sells expensive brand name electronics), and reputable businesses such as Home Depot and World Market serving as anchors. However, pretty much everything else is pure sketch. The pimp stores, currancy exchange, bargain basement shoes, etc. Mixed in with constant jay-walkers and panhandling make this an unfortunate strip.
