Pockets Opens in South Loop; The Grille Looks to be Struggling

We've actually never been to Pockets (and have heard mixed reviews), but regardless a new Pockets location has opened in Printer's Row (at 555 S. Dearborn).  We recently got a coupon in the mail and it looks like you can order online now so we assume it's up and running.

In other local restaurant news, the Grille (at 823 S. State), hasn't been open the last couple of times we went by the spot. We're not sure the status of this place, but when we went by during the early evening the place wasn't open.  As you probably remember, the restaurant was originally called UFood, but shut down shortly after it opened for some reason.  Anyone know the status of the Grille?

  1. Dunno about The Grille but Pockets has been open at least since I moved here in August.

  2. Pockets... is this really an improvement???

When we have a decent Beef or Hot Dog stand in the sloop, then watch me get excited.

  3. Pockets is a nice little lunch place especially if you want something light/fresh. My fear is that this particular location is cursed . . . everything that's been in the past few years has folded fast.

SRO does pretty good Chicago-fare. Best turkey chili around IMO!

  4. I have never seen anyone in that Pockets. Every once in awhile I will see the delivery guy out and about. I've never been, it just doesn't appeal to me.

  5. It's not my kind of thing either . . . all the businesses on that block (besides Star*ucks) seem like they're on life support.

  6. My husband and I went to "The Grill" when it was UFood, because we felt it was a nice healthy choice in the neighborhood. The last time we went, we noticed the name change. When we inquired we were told that the owner wanted to introduce some new sandwiches like Rubin and pulled pork, which UFood Grill did not allow. So the owner backed out of his franchise, and decided to go it on his own. Don't think it's working out so well for them.

  7. I ordered Pockets once and was very underwhelmed. I probably walked by The Grille 5 times wondering whether it was part of the gym next door before I was able to determine that it was separate. Still haven't had any urges to eat there, but it sounds like I'm not missing much.

  8. UFood was a great concept and is very successful on the east coast. I live around the corner and at there at least once a week. The Grille went almost exactly contrary to the quick, healthy food concept, I dont see how the owner thought that it would be a good idea. All 3 of the Chicago UFoods switched over. For some reason, they havent bothered to get real fries yet. I keep hoping ufood will come back, but I doubt it. I dont care if the Grille goes out of business

  9. Well, The Grill (formerly UFood) appears to be closed.
