Is This One of the South Loops Falcons?

On Tuesday we had a post about Sloopy, a Peregrine Falcon that was named after the blog.

This prompted a reader to send an email and picture he captured this past winter:

Hey Sloopy,

I know very little about birds, but found this little guy sitting on my railing back in February. Could this be one of the falcons? Sorry for the poor quality camera phone pic.

  1. Nice shot.

It appears to be a different kind of falcon: the peregrine's smaller cousin, the American kestrel:

  2. There are quite a few kestrels that live in the south loop. I've seen them on the posts in the field south of target and occasionally near the lakefront. They're predators and probably love the little varmits that are easy to catch in an urban area.
