Protesters at Roosevelt and Wabash BP

A reader writes:
I was walking home from Whole Foods and when I turned down Wabash I saw this protest. It was going on around 3:30pm today. There were people with cameras but no major stations or networks present when I was there. They were chanting "Don't pay the bill, for the spill!" I took one shot from the west side of Wabash and figured I'd get a close up on the other side. I walked up and who should be front and center? Jesse Jackson! There were a few cops hanging around but overall it was pretty tame and straight forward. BP bad. Environment good. Please enjoy my pics. I enjoy your site.

Thanks for the complement. We enjoy your pics!

  1. A month+ late and a few million barrels short.

Where's the genuine outrage over this oil catastrophe? BP is no closer to stopping this volcano of oil than they where the day the rig failed.

BP and their cronies continue to point the finger at others. If this happened off the coast of the UK and a American-owned rig was at fault you could be damn sure that their government would demand that all available US resources and monies be thrown at the problem until it was fixed properly.

I'd like to see some real (non-violent) protesting that hits BP in the wallet . . . like padlocking all their pump handles or something.

  2. Oil spill is bad. Jesse Jackson is too. Why in the world is he not protesting a BP station in his own neighborhood?

  3. Stephen, I suggest you get (re)acquainted with your dictionary.

  4. I'm so sick of these race-hustling, poverty pimp tree-huggers. What are you going to run your cars on, meat?

  5. Better yet: why isn't Jesse protesting the violence about 30 blocks south - where another 20+ shootings took place over the last two nights alone.

  6. Does BP corporate own this station or is it a franchise? If it's the latter, it makes little sense to protest some local owner who has no sway over the Gulf situation.

Also, I hope these protesters aren't the ones who always complain about the lack of parking or need for more parking in new South Loop developments.

  7. Want to take a bet on how many of those protestors drive cars? Hypocrites.

  8. Can they also please protest against all the bums, beggars, and bangers that congregate all over that BP station?

  9. Geez...I know the guy in the picture is holding a "CLEAN ENERGY" sign, but that doesnt mean we have to turn this political. I'm really surprised we are criticizing people who are pissed at BP.

  10. Luddite is spelled correctly. Why would you tell me I spelled it incorrectly if you yourself had not taken a moment to double check it yourself?

  11. The so-called "Reverend" Jesse Jackson is an outside agitator. Go Rand Paul!

  12. Your spelling of the term "Luddites" is fine . . . but your use of it is incorrect.

  13. Rand Paul! HA!

That flake does not believe that the Constitution allows the government to force businesses, landlords, etc. to change how they do business and who they do business with. He fears that doing so in the name of positive social change puts us on a slippery slope to extra-Constitutional measures in the service of negative social change -- taking away guns, putting people in camps.

You can disagree, but that's where he's coming from.

  14. A quote from Obama back in February:

"Make no mistake: whether it is nuclear energy, or solar or wind energy, if we fail to invest in these technologies today, we’ll be importing them tomorrow."

He left out off shore drilling but he's for that as well. It's unfortunate what happened in the Gulf, but we still will need all types of energy sources to supply our growing consumption.

  15. You'd be looking for "neo-luddite" unless you think their angst is directed at a Spinning Jenny.

  16. These protesters are not taking issue with technological changes/advances. Label them if you must but the term (neo)Luddites does not apply. Anyone not totally pissed at BP is nothing short of a sociopath.

  17. This BP is franchised most likely, why are they protesting a franchisee when BP is the problem. You are ruininng this persons business. It makes little to no sense. Of course, this doesn't occur to Jessie Jackson, he's so freakin smart....ha! These people are idiots. WHy cause harm to a franshisee that has no say in the oil explorations. Instead, these people should protest at the BP head quarters, or buy a one way ticket to idiot-ville. You give protestors a stick and a sign and they autmoattically stop thinking. Morons!!!

  19. Another possibility is that they chose that BP because it is in a central location at which they would likely be noticed by other people and the media. My assumption is that the purpose of most protests is to get attention and get others involved, and that the location is mostly symbolic. I highly doubt the protest hurt the business of that specific location. I'm sure people are protesting at the headquarters as well, but that doesn't mean a downtown rally does not have its place.

  20. Jesse must want a few gas station deals, like the hustling he did with Anheiser-Busch to get beer distributors.

So, when there are plane crashes, do he and the other people protest Airbus? There are more people killed in the far south side every 2 months than was at the BP rig, do all of us start protesting black people with guns? Do all of you protest GM, Mercades, or Toyota because of the 1,000+ people killed in Illinois last year? The media fake outrage is amazing.

You had a decorated Veteran of two tours, a community leader, and a Chicago police officer slain in front of his parents home so 4 guys could take his motorcycle. Where is Jesse's outrage?

Some posters here want me to be outraged at BP, yet 450-900 residents are murdered in Chicago, and where is the outrage and protests?

Make no mistake about it, Obama, while doing nothing, will not waste this event in bottlenecking off-shore projects the Chicago way, so he can start requiring greasing the skids to pass projects, or more indirectly putting in his "Daley-George" law firm or "Senator Cullerton title company" in place that companies are 'recommended' hiring to best shepard developers to City project approval.

F this, I am running down to BP and get me 24 gallons of gas, a six pack of Coke, and a bag of chips just so I can stick it to Jesse.

  21. So, let me get this straight: Jesse Jackson is bad, he and all other protesters should focus more on your pet causes, and the President is going to use the oil spill to somehow pass pork projects benefiting the Illinois machine. Not so coherent, but at least your last paragraph was amusing.
