20 Cars Vandalized Overnight on 1300 Block of South Wabash

We wish this was an April Fools joke, but sadly it appears it isnt.  Just stupid and unncessary (via Chicago Tribune):
Windows of about 20 cars were smashed overnight in the South Loop, according to police.

Police were called to the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue around 8 a.m., said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. Driver and passenger windows were broken but nothing appeared to have been taken, he said.

No one was in custody. Area Central was investigating.

  1. So what? This is the city! If you don't like having your car vandalized, move to the suburbs.

  5. This happened last week to a number of cars parked in the outdoor parking lots on Indiana.

  6. get the facts straight...our condos got hit and we're in a gated garage! 3 shattered windows (including mine) and neighbor's car got stolen!! So, this has nothing to do with living in the city...it has to do with the rampant violence in the south loop that's clearly taken over the neighborhood. need we remind others about the robberies, assaults, and even rape stories within the same 6 block radius over the past year? it's not just "living in the city"

  7. gated garage? what does that even mean? Are you referring to the parking lot on wabash next to giocco with a gate?

  8. This is such a sad story to see because it feels like our city and neighborhood are going to shit. Personally, I'm dreading the CPS schools getting closed and what that will mean for all of those kids left displaced. Times like these I'm glad I pay for garage parking.

  10. Yes, there is an uptick in muggings, roberries, assaults, and vandalism. However, you have to put up with that in order to enjoy high-quality imported olive oil. Yum.

  11. I don't know about you, but I keep a strong presence on my street and "say hello" to everyone. Those that look suspicious, I keep my eye on until they are out of sight.

  14. At least spell his name right (Daley)

A huge thanks to those intellects that blindly voted for Rahm based on of his clought with everybodys friend Barack

Chico would not have the city in this bad of shape---

  15. It would be nice to hear someone blame the parents of these kids instead of the police, schools, and politicians. The parents of each crook and/or flash mobber should be held accountable. Youth crime is synonymous with parent stupidity.

  16. Happened to 2 cars on 19th ST last week as well.

  17. SLoop seems safer to me compared with what I see reported every other day of the crime going on in Gold Coast/Streeterville/River North.

Just going off of recent memory(so I'm likely missing something major), the Mag Mile area has had a road rage shooting on Michigan Ave, stabbing inside the Westin, multiple flash mob/snatch n grab thefts, murder at the Hotel Felix...Sloop has had a sexual assault & burglary, car vandalism, thefts, assault weapon robbery at the mini mart.

Police caught suspects in sexual assault & mini mart robbery as well as Westin stabbing & murder @ Felix.

    That's a very simple comparison...but

Anon 9:55 PM- After looking at this comparison, do you really think we are worse off than the Mag Mile and that rampant violence has taken over the Sloop? Curious what others think...

  18. Definitely not rampant violence. It's typical big city crime with a couple major incidents.

Rampant violence would indicate a growing and out of control trend of physical force assaults against people, which the post from 3/19 indicates we are not experiencing.

  19. @9:39am

Chicasgo has the highest crime rate in the country (in terms of mid/large cities). Therefore, I think "rampant" does describe what we have been experiencing.

For a world-leading developed nation the US has a shocking about of violent crime particularly gun violence. The fact that Chicago leads the nation's largest cities in terms of crime rate pretty much speaks volumes.
