Nepal House Replacing Beleaguered A'Cappella Bistro at 1301 S Michigan; Shooting for Mid-February Opening

The mysterious and beleaguered A'Cappella Bistro (1301 S. Michigan) has apparently served its last meal.  We heard some whispers about this and a reader recently sent us the following email/picture:
Hey Sloopy,
I was looking through the coupon mailer today and noticed this section shown on the Chicago Curry House coupon. Maybe this answers what's happening with Acapella at 1301 S Michigan? Anything will be better than that restaurant - I'd be excited to give this a shot. Do you know anything about this?

Well we've be highly entertained by the message board thread "Why is A'Capaella Still Open?" which has been going for some time.  Back on January 12th a reader posted a rumor that it was going to be a curry place.  Apparently this is true.

We also walked by A'Cappella last night and the place was closed.  More telling was that the entire space was going through a demo (like the ground was being torn up among other things).

The good news is that A'Cappella is apparently done.  The best news is that this new restaurant is associated with The Curry House (899 S. Plymouth Ct).  If you haven't been to this restaurant you're missing out, it's absolutely delicious.  The only question about Nepal House is whether or not the owner of A'Cappella is affiliated in some way.  The reason we wonder is because there is a hand written sign on the window talking about a new concept.  Maybe this is a partnership?

Anyway you cut this, it's a positive development in what has been one of the strangest things we've witnessed in the Sloop.  A'Cappella Bistro has perplexed us even before we lived in the Sloop.  Needless to say, it may be the end to one of the longest running inside jokes/questions/topics that residents liked to talk about.

Regardless, welcome to Nepal House!

  1. Yes! Curry House is very good.. just one tip for everyone.. the best way to try indian food is a lunch or dinner buffet.. Dont order a la carte.

  2. Um yeah... I dont take resturant reviews from dopes that think Chicago Curry House is "good"

That place is EQUAL to something i'd see in Midway airport. Question-- are the same people that like Curry house also the folks that ask for steak sauce at Acadia? Go away morons

  3. He or she didn't say the Curry House was the best Indian out there. Good is a fair term. I'd be happy to have a few more "good" restaurants in the neighborhood.

I don't know why people on this site have to be so rude to one another. I don't see it on other blogs, so it makes me feel I live in a neighborhood of a-holes.

  4. A little inside info - I don't know about the parking space conspiracy discussed on the A'Cappela thread but I do know that 'the cop' is one of two owners of the entire building (and also the landlord of the much-higher-regarded neighboring Panozzo's). I have been referring to A'Cappela as 'The World's only operating/closed restaurant for years. My guess (or my hope) would be the owners are settling back into just being landlords now.

  5. Well, I'm happy to see A'Cappela gone and a new place coming in. Any way you look at it, it has to be an improvement.

I will miss the A'Cappela window sign that read "Best Pizza in Chicago" and then in small print underneath "As voted by our staff"

  6. ANON @ 1037 am

I dont care what you think.... Guess what-- If this neighborhood actually thinks that curry house is anything better than deplorable then we DO in fact live in an area full of aholes

  7. I've only been to Curry House once, but I thought it was good. I'm by no means an Indian food connoisseur, but it's nice to have different options in the 'hood. Looking forward to the new concept.

  8. Curry House is a joint. sorry but who wants to live in an area and smell indian food all day? There is a reason most people make fun of that slop

  9. I also find the Curry House to be "good" and I look forward to trying this new place. The lunch buffee at the Curry House is very tasty, especially the veggie dishes (even though I am a huge meat fan).

I also agree that there is an overabundance of abrasive and narcissistic people posing on this blog (e.g. Anon @ 8:46, Brendan, FitGuy etc.).
Anon @ 10:37 AM. It is peculiar isn't it? Do people turn into a-holes when they buy a downtown condo and choose to only see the city from the comfort of their air-conditioned car, hence secluding themselves from being a part of an actual community?

  10. I have mixed feelings about this spot.

On one hand it's good to be rid of the old place A'capella.

On the other hand I am skeptical due to the potential ownwership "the cop".

Also, I think we need a healthy alternative here. An organic salad bar is what we need. All of us should only be eating salads without dressing and raw vegitables.

    Sincerely
    TheFitterGuy..

PS, don't listen to the "fitguy" in real life he is actually quite chubby, frequents White Castle, McDonalds and on the rare occassion he has a salad he smothers it with Thousand Island.

  12. Ha fitter guy, that makes me smile :) I totally believe fit guy is in fact how you describe him! Each time he posts something moronic I imagine this total slob typing away at his computer with one hand stuffing a fat, juicy, delicious burger in the other, self loathing on full display. Love it!!

  13. Fitguy doesn't even live in the Sloop. And personal trainer was not his career choice. Which is why he's so bitter.

  14. Anon @ 8:51pm,

Yeh, we have lot's of different types here in the sloop..it adds to the fabric and character of our neighborhood.

As long as the Fitguy is supporting our hood, trying to get in shape and lobbying for healthy fitness I fully support him.

...and, he is in better shape now than when we were in high school. Fitguy's nickname used to be "Bloomer the Boomer" because he loved those fried blooming onions and because he fell down one time in the school cafeteria.

Was glad to hear when he moved to the sloop and I saw that he was down to about 310lbs.

We could use some more restaurants in the south loop but for all of us I hope it is a Pret a Manger or something local and not The Outback Steakhouse with those blooming onions.

  15. ganging up on people that didnt even post here---Im sorry but that is sad and distastful. Its exactly the kind of immature behavior I would like to see removed from this otherwise informative blog...

I actually enjoy Curry house very much as my wife and I usually walk in there with our daughter on Weds nights before her class. Love their lamb samosa!

Enjoy your hating, sad souls. Remember-- life is too short to spend hating others, why not try embracing the present...

  16. Unfortunately, 90% of people I've encountered in my life are a-holes...would nice to see more of the 10%...that said I am looking forward to another curry place in the area, do like the Curry House.

  17. So Brendan,
When you gang up on an entire group of posters (i.e., Anons) that's okay...just to clarify

  18. May be a bit of a circular post- but is seems there is interest outside of the South Loop
