Karamela Awning Goes Up at 1250 S. Michigan

A reader recently sent us an email letting us know that the brown paper has been taken off of the cafe that was rumored to be coming to 1250 S. Michigan (next to Pita Heaven). Sure enough, it's true and the identity of the new space is called Cafe Karamela. We recently went by to take a look and snap some pictures:
The sign in the door states describes the concept as "New, Trendy, Unique and Exciting". We know the first adjective is correct, but we will have to wait and see about the last three.

Hopefully it's true.

  1. It makes me proud to see Pita Heaven, Waffles and La Cantina (Velvet Lounge) owners open up another business in the south loop (along with Flo & Santos, Jimmy Greens and Lou Malnati's expand their storefronts). Congrats to them and thank you.

  3. great, more "trendy" hot spots. What ever happened to a good ol' coffee shop?

  4. If you have to say "trendy" you are probably not "trendy". That typeface alone says "dated"

"maybe" some "people" dont have the same "opinions" as "you" when "it" comes to "trendy coffe houses" "pal"

  9. this place would thrive even if only the residents of the building it is in would support it. But they wont bother to go downstairs.

  10. i live above here and am wondering how you came to this conclusion

  11. As a boring, slightly overweight, middle-aged white guy, only one phrase comes to mind: Haters gonna hate. Good luck Karamela!

  12. I normally hate Brendan's comments about randon anon posts but lately it seems to be getting worse. Any positive news lately results in criticism by many using this site.

Personally, I'll give any place a chance even if I dislike their other restaurants. It'll be nice having another option even if I don't visit the place.

There is no difference posting as an anon or putting some name in the box..steven, joe, mark, rodrigo, shaqueeta..get over yourselves..I think this place has a chance to do well. There is a little bit of foot traffic in front of this building.

  16. sorry if most of the anons who post here are complete idiots but thats just the way it is.

If you want to be known as a moron, than post under "anon", if not, put your name in.....it takes two seconds.

  18. O'Malleys is official. Going with Plan B--- and english style gastropub with menu desined by Firehouse Chef.

Looking for late June opening but most likely early fall

  19. Is O'Malley going to open something in Motor Row? I believe the Defender building is going to be out of his hands, but we thought he had some plans for a couple of other buildings in that area and maybe was going to do something with the firehouse chef over there not the former Grace O'Malleys spot. Just curious? Either way, looking forward to the new concept.

  27. Here we go again. Sloopin - it's really time to ask for email's or accounts. I realize many people read this blog (however, most of my friends that live in the sloop stopped reading this blog a long time ago), but really.. it's the same 20 people who comment on here, might as well request an email to post.

  31. I agree it's just a blog, but at some point, it is nice to get a real dialogue going with facts vs just ridiculous comments or the stupid back & forth as we are having right now.

    ReplyDelete
  32. yeah well like i said its just a blog so why not try and relax

  33. Well this makes all the idiots that stuck up for "anon rights" look like real chumps. This thread is beyond a waste of time with all the childish remarks.
