In Search of Indoor Basketball for the Winter

A reader writes:
Hey guys,

Love the site. Had a quick question: Are there any good places to play indoor basketball, during the winter, in the Sloop?

Any leagues? Open gyms? wondering if you could open this up to the readers.

Thank you,
ML
XSport (819 S. State) seems to always have pick-up ball and seems to always be busy. LA Fitness (1101 S. Canal) also has courts but we're unsure how active their courts are.

Any other ideas?

  2. That Xsport is nasty in general, never cleaned. I am a member at LA, it was great at first. Now there are 15 year olds on the only basketball court and seems like they are always fighting from a distance. The weight area often looks like a scene out of a prison movie. There are two or three groups there everyday, sit there for hours working on there arms and act like its a lounge. Love the free parking there though, very convenient.

  4. FFC on state st has free parking too and is ten times better. You wont feel like youre working out at a huge guy joint. More low key and cleaner

  5. I know that there is open gym hoops at LA Fitness; I also know that they allow anyone in as a guest to play hoops, which is why I cancelled my membership. I completely agree with the previous poster: the thugs on that court have destroyed LA Fitness. Gang-bangers now hang all over the gym equipment and have broken into numerous lockers. Enter at your own risk

When does this take place, how can I learn more about playing here?

  7. MEETUP is an online social event site. Look it up on there after you sign up. It is not always at NTA, but last year it was.

  8. XSport is nasty? I'm a member there and think it's great. Maybe you need to join Oprah's club.

  9. 24 hour gyms are never cleaned properly. I used to be a member there myself and you are the first person Ive ever heard defend that place. The common theme was cant wait to get out of here but cant cancel my contract. FFC's are really nice, heard pretty expensive?

  10. Agreed- XSport is gross and a total meat market. We've been members off FFC for years and switched when XSport opened but quickly went back to FFC. It is clean, has friendly staff and I generally feel like my belongs are safe when I'm there. I didn't get that feeling at XSport. As for LA Fitness- the crowd I've seen while trying to shop in the plaza seems pretty sketchy. I would rather pay a little more for piece of mind/safety.

  11. The parkdistrict in Bridgeport offers a free indoor basketball court, I believe. Right across from the Cell.

  12. I concur. Xsport is a bit gross. Court is always full and small. Not a big fan.
