Introducing "Events in the Sloop" Calendar

If you're a perceptive reader you've probably noticed that a small calendar has appeared on the right side of Sloopin underneath the "recent comments" section.

We're calling this "Events in the Sloop" and the goal is to be a resource so you know of events going on in the South Loop. We will be populating this calendar with events that we know of, but please send us events that you know of that might not be on our radar.

As you can see, there are fireworks tonight and the Printers Row lit fest is this weekend as well.

If it's a free or non-profit event we will gladly post the event. If it's a for-profit business that's having an event we will be charging a small fee per listing (most likely $5). Also we're in the process of starting a restaurant specials calendar that will look similar to the calendar that's currently live. Again, we're going to charge a small fee for this. If you're a restaurant owner or know someone who is, please let them know about this new function we're offering.

Hopefully you find this of value! If not let us know. If you have ideas for improvement let us know.

And finally, just wanted to take a second to thank all of our readers and contributors. Sloopin wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for you peeps! So thanks!

  4. anon 4:13pm - I think you're referring to the news today that the city is cancelling July 4 fireworks:

I could be wrong but I think Navy Pier (which is different than the city) still puts on the weekly fireworks and July 4th show. It's just not as elaborate of a show...

  5. Sloopin, we (the Daystar Center) should connect. We're a new neighborhood non-profit that would love more exposure for our events and classes. We are starting our summer classes next week and have a summer camp for children in August. The details are on our website: http://www.daystarcenter.org.

  6. YAY! This is a great improvement. It is one of my great frustrations of life that I read several south loop blogs about amazing events that have already happened. I always wondered where folks get all that info before in. I am excited that finally south loop has a social calendar!

  7. I see the Iron & Wine concert at Pritzker next week, but what about the rest of the summer? While not strictly the south loop, I think the full summer Pritzker schedule would be a welcome addition to this calendar.

  8. Definitely a good addition, thanks. One note though - some of the events w/ long titles are cut off (i.e. iron at wine....) and unable to be read fully. If you could fix that, it'd make it even better.

  9. Great idea, make sure the Summerdance lineup is included 9if it is still happening)

I don't think classes at Daystar Center should be included though, events are not the same as classes... plus Daystar is religious-based isn't it?
