Police Shoot at Motorist After Vehicle Stopped

We've had a couple people email and comment about this shooting last night in the South Loop, so we thought we would link to the story and post a blurb:
Two officers got out of their vehicle and as they were approaching it the suspect -- who was in the driver’s seat -- pointed a gun at police and an officer fired at the suspect, Gaines said.

Police said the suspect -- who was the only one inside the white, 4-door vehicle which fled the scene -- is a known criminal and a search was under way as of early Tuesday for him.

  1. So not shot by the person in the car only police?

  2. From what we've read, the Police were the only ones to shoot.

However, the report said that we read said the person in the car pulled a gun, but didn't shoot. It all seems a little vague to us.

  3. Nothing like having the police shoot off rounds in a residential area with kids & two crowded restaurants merely yards away. A valet guy at the Firehouse said the smokers outside literally hit the ground when they heard the shots.

WTF? Why is this story so vague and underreported? I moved out of the Humboldt Park neighborhood to get away from stuff like this.

  4. This gives new meaning to "Shots Around the Sloop."

  5. If the suspect is a "known criminal," why do we not have a description?

  6. Wow...I parked my car on 14th between Michigan and Indiana a little before 9:00. I was glad to get a good parking spot, now I'm glad I didn't get home a few minutes earlier...

  7. I'm 99 percent sure this didn't actually happen on Michigan avenue. I saw a police scene in the alley between Michigan and wabash. It looked like it was behind grace omalleys, but not sure.

  8. Does it really matter if the perp pulled the gun on the cops in the alley or on the street? Either way, a "known criminal," brazen enough to pull a gun on the cops (imagine what he would pull on a civilian?) is loose on the streets of this neighborhood. And people like FGFM are mocking and dismissing this incident. Thanks, neighbor!

Funny (and sad) thing: People like FGFM are more disturbed by bad spelling than by armed criminals pulling guns on cops in our backyard. This type of attitude is part of the reason why so many neighborhoods in certain parts of this city are destroyed by crime.

Hey FGFM, do you really think a mugger is going to care that you have spell check on your laptop when he takes it from you at gunpoint?

  9. Do we really need to ask FGFM to expand on his/her idealistic mantra of non-sense? Of course people will panic when gunshots are fired in the sloop. It's a natural reaction when you're accustomed to a civilized environment.

Let's continue to monitor and identify savagery in our neighborhood. Those who ignore it can continue what they're doing...nothing.

  10. In case you guys didn't read the tribune on Monday, there was a mugging incident on the 1900 block of S. Michigan that involved a gun as well, but in this instance the perpetrator was apprehended. Supposedly shots were fired in this instance. What is going on in the South Loop? How often do events like this occur or are they just isolated events? All parts of the city has its share of mixed living but there is no doubt some are safer than others.

    Move back to Bridgeport already.

I'm not going to panic over an isolated incident.

It's a natural reaction when you're accustomed to a civilized environment.

Yeah, but how did you react to it?

Let's continue to monitor and identify savagery in our neighborhood.

I do it on this forum all the time, and you are the subordinate savage to the racist anon.

Um, what exactly do you mean by "mixed living?"

  14. I'm still waiting for a description of the shooter in the 14th Street incident.

Also, as the shooter was caught in the 19th Street incident, is there a link to his/her mugshot anywhere?

As this is just the start of the violent spring/summer crime season in Chicago, it would be nice to know what we are up against this year.

  15. Mixed Living- Affluent living with the poor or criminals living with non-criminals. Vice Versa. That is true urban living, we live in a big city and no parts are devoid of crime. With unemployment so high and the weather getting warmer crime will naturally peak.

I'm not aware of any areas aside from prisons where everyone is a criminal.

  17. Hence, prison would not be considered a 'mixed living' environment.

  18. Anon, I agree with the gist of your statement. Crime is part of the reality of city living. I think speculation about a neighborhood's general safety based on isolated incidents, however, can be damaging to a neighborhood's reputation. Regardless, it is unproductive.

Many crimes are reported publicly. Does anyone have some time to crunch the numbers and determine whether there are any crime trends in the South Loop?

I also don't see the connection between so-called "mixed living" and crime. Do you suggest that interaction between people of different means and/or different criminal records is a driver of crime? Chicago is already pretty segregated by neighborhood. Would even more homogeneous neighborhoods lead to less crime? In highlighting the South Loop, a somewhat diverse neighborhood, it seems that you presuming a trend and laying the blame on its diversity.

The mixed living bit was apparently an awkward attempt at a code phrase. In any event, the South Loop is a relatively low crime area as far as I can tell.

  20. Yes, the crime level is low in comparison to other neighborhoods(farther south and west) but higher than Lincoln Park,Roscoe, West Loop, Gold Coast. There is an obvious difference in crime once you pass Cullerton Ave. I would say the crime incidents according to the Crime every block website increases after 18th. FGFM this just taken from the website you referenced. No one is trying to be racist here. We are going by sheer facts, not pinning it on a race. Stop playing the uneccesary race card. I feel you are more racist than any one else on this blog. You claim you are not being ignorant, but you are by creating and inferrring undertones to others comments.

    How so?

How do you feel about the Jewel having a parking lot so that we can be "invaded" by the South and West Sides?

  22. The quality of the clientale at Jewel speaks for itself - no 'citation' required. Unfortunately, even without the large parking lot, the Jewel would be a cesspool due to its proximity to bus and rail lines linked to the ganglands of the west and south.

Thumping our chests over being safer than the very non-diverse west and south sides is nothing to be proud about.

It happens to be outstanding as I am a frequent customer.

Yeah, because no one would ever think of shopping at the Jewels at Roosevelt & Ashland and 35th & King. Do you want the St. James Hotel back?

Thumping our chests over being safer than the very non-diverse west and south sides is nothing to be proud about.

Pity that you have to live next to the projects because you can't afford a nice place like me, even if you do claim to pay 10K in property taxes!

  25. Anon, I thought you were going to maintain the moral high ground for a second after your noon post, but once again you took the bait. What percentage of the shoppers at Jewel would you say are contributing to this "cesspool" and what exactly are they doing? I haven't had any problems there, so you please share your insights.

  26. Jewel just happens to be close to the EL, hence the diverse crowd in there. I could care less,I like the Jewel. It is small and gets the Job done. I don't want to buy a $5 apple at Whole foods. Anyways, let's keep in mind that there are more than one Anon posting on here. Lets just hope and pray we have a nice and safe summer in the SLOOP!!!

  27. Any inside info on the woman busted for sneaking into South Loop residential garages and vandalizing and breaking into vehicles? There was a short blurb about it in the Red Eye today.
