Open Threads and Facebook Page

We’ve been getting a lot of great feedback and suggestions from readers and perusers, so we wanted to make everyone aware of some new additions to the site:

1) Open Threads
Many people have concerns, questions and topics that they would love to see covered on Sloopin. We are going to do our best to follow these topics but are also hoping for help from our readers. With that said, we are going to start some open threads that ideally will serve as conversations and as a place for the greater South Loop community to discuss rumors, pose questions and tackle issues that might be hot topics. The goal is to have topics that readers will comment on and provide their opinions.

We will start with some basic topics, but feel free to email us at sloopin@gmail.com to suggest other topics you would like to see covered. You will find the “Open Threads” listed at the top toolbar.

2) Facebook Page
We’ve started a Sloopin Facebook page for a couple of reasons. A) Most everyone is on Facebook these days, so it will hopefully serve as a good place to find and converse with residents or people interested in the Sloop. B) There is a “Discussions” tab that allows Sloopin fans to talk about issues or whatever they want. Again, this hopefully will prove to be a good resource for the neighborhood.

There is a Facebook logo on the right side of Sloopin. Simply click on that and it will direct you to our Facebook page for you to become a fan.

Thanks for the support and keep the feedback coming!

  1. Jeers to whomever put the large chain and lock on the unused parking lot on Cullerton and Prairie. Dog Lovers have a suspicion that it wasn't the the owner (Piping Union), but rather a non dog friendly neighbor. In result our pups will be playing, pooping and peeng more in the neighborhood, as opposed to this contained yet fun space.

  2. Has anyone noticed the baseball diamond fencing that is being completed on the open field below the bridge just west of clark on 18th street. Looks like a great place for summer fun!

  3. To anonymous Cullerton an Prairie Dog owner; The piping union is not the owner has not been for a while. It is said that Tommy D'piazza (reputed mobster turned developer, turned mayor friend, turned businessman) wrestled the property from the Union. He then was trying to do a deal with Senator Cullerton as partner, did not work, sold the lot to a guy named Elias Abubeker, (but the LLC is defunked now), and rumor I heard was that this LLC was a front for Frankel and Giles, of the XO crashed project. At the same time, insider real estate attornies Rolando Acosta, and E. Zemendes (one being mentioned as campaign manager for the other Greek guy running for senate, and was also caught up in the UI scandal.

  6. I have lived in the South Loop for several years and unfortunately I am not a lucky person who works in the city and I therefore drive to the burbs for work. I have noticed several times the dangerous area for bikers at State and Roosevelt. I have seen several accidents there and saw another one today. Something has to be done or more awareness for bikers coming from "behind" the wall on Roosevelt and cars turning. I would really like if you could do a post on this to help make more people aware of this dangerous area.

  7. When are we going to take bake our city from the corrupt unions and law makers? We have the highest sales tax in the nation and are broke... For what??? To pay crossing guards $22 per hour. There are 4 guards on each corner + a crossing guard manager. On any given day we have 3,000 "OEMC" feet on the street. Not to mention that we have already paid for fully working stoplights, installed cameras at most stoplights, and still need them? It was an overzealous power monger who OK'd this work. IT NEEDS TO GO - DON'T TREAD IN MY BACKYARD

  8. Is there a halt on the construction at Old St Mary's school? Things looked like they were progressing and now just tumbleweed.......

  9. Does anyone know what's moving into the storefront on Wells (between Harrison and Polk)? Construction activity is happening.

  10. Does anyone know if the stairs at the rear of the Roosevelt Collection complex will be opened up for use? The driveway has been paved and they have added a sidewalk, but no landing yet at the bottom of the stairs.

  11. The northern section of that Roosevelt Collection plot is supposed to be developed into some type of park or green space . . . I'm sure they have revenue problems regarding future (unrealized) construction phases.

  12. Re: Roosevelt Collection. I've read the park that's supposed to go in at the northern section won't be done for about a year. Don't know if the stairs will not open until it's done or not. I live in the building just north of there and see VERY little activity. However, you can go in through the parking garage and up the elevator. I use it to cut through to Target and Whole Foods.

  13. Im hoping they can create a outside platform that extends from the lounge, so if you are at the bar inside the movie theatre, you can stand or sit out there. Also, it may increase foot traffic for folks who just want to walk up and relax vs coming around and entering from Roosevelt.

  14. Street Closing on S. Plymouth from Polk down to 9th . . . movie location signs put up yesterday at about 6pm . . . parking restrictions starting 11am 11/9.

  15. Did anyone see the spot lights next to Firehouse last night? Any ideas what that was for or about?

  16. Anyone know what happened to L.A. Tan on State (next to the computer store)? I just walked by and saw it was completely empty.

  17. No love for Flavor 180 (State and 15th across from Valencia)? It just opened and I've heard already that the turkey burgers are amazing. Me and the hubs are going to check it out this weekend.

  18. I work in a high rise downtown and saw some love for Flavor 180 in the elevator today! Some good words were on the screen which lists new places and what they are known for. Someone in the elevator said "Wow, that sounds good". Will need to head down there and try it out! Good Luck to Flavor 180, we could always use new food options in the Sloop

  20. The south loop need a marquee festival with music, food, etc. Something like a block party or taste of the south loop, maybe a wine festival. A marquee festival would bring hype to the south loop from outside neighborhoods and could possible bring more business to the south loop from other neighborhoods. Every other neighborhood that I hear mentioned on sloopin has something like this for example Lincoln Parks art and music festival.

  21. Has anyone else had the pleasure of enjoying the Orange Line CTA Route 702? I wish this driver was on every train/bus in the city. He has the best personality and welcomes and greets you over the speaker before approaching Library. I love it...makes the trip from the Sloop to the Loop even more enjoyable!

  22. Anyone out there have to bail on a Terrazio contract? How hard did they make it, since it appears darn near impossible to get a mortgage in the building between the lack of sales and dropping property values?

    ReplyDelete
  23. While back there was some talk on sloopin's blog about some of the new development turning to rental. I have a contract that, because of the expired mortgage contingency clause in it, I am going to default on the contract if/when I walk and lose some $. Not sure what else I am in store for. Wondered if anyone else has any feedback on their experience with themselves defaulting in Terrazio. I ask because the mortgage lender said there have been many and that Terrazio has down even lower than last year this time, which causes some of the remaining folks more headache trying to get financing. Let alone the fact that the developer is now leasing units, which depreciates the value some, and if a person can get some private financing, the appraisal is now at risk. Can

  24. It appears there is some activity in the vacant commercial space at the north-west corner of Wabash and 14th Pl, across from Coliseum Park. Some ladders, water bottles, and framing some walls. How about some Scoopin' from Sloopin'!?

  25. Just heard that at the Roosevelt Collection, the new owners are going to demolish the pavilion retail buildings that sit inside the courtyard (between the two driveways). Demolition will take place soon.
